Nicola is a final year PhD student at the Centre for Public Health at Queen’s University Belfast. After graduating with a BSc in Food Quality, Safety and Nutrition with Professional Studies (Queen’s University Belfast) in 2013, Nicola went on to begin her PhD. Nicola’s PhD research has focused on factors associated with ageing and hearing loss, with a focus on dietary factors and dietary patterns. Her current work has examined data from the Caerphilly Prospective Study and Northern Ireland Cohort for the Longitudinal Study of Ageing (NICOLA). Findings so far show that a healthy dietary pattern is associated with a reduced risk of hearing loss. Nicola has also explored the low use of hearing aids in older people through qualitative work. These findings will be of use to policy makers, GPs, audiologists and support staff from charitable bodies who are working with older people with hearing loss.
